Government Tiruppur Medical College & Hospital, Tiruppur is situated at Tiruppur District, Tamilnadu. This Medical College is situated in industrial area and caters the need of rural population. Most of the patient attending this Hospital comes not only from the same district, but also from neighbouring districts.

As a referral center, with enhanced medical facilities and specialized services the hospital receives patients referred from several nearby Government Hospitals located in towns such as Avinashi, Palladam, Kangeyam, Uthukuli, Dharapuram, Udumalpet, and other nearby villages.

Tiruppur itself is known as a "Dollar City" because of its thriving textile industry, which contributes to a wide variety of medical cases related to industrial and urban health issues. The patient profile attending the Hospital since the Inception of the College in March 2021, suggests that most of the patients are illiterate and hardworking labourers predominantly belonging to lower socioeconomic status. The rate of Alcohol dependence, Cannabis dependence, depression, anxiety and stress related problems are high in these areas. Suicidal attempt, completed suicide and extended suicide are also high in these areas.

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY has also been functioning since the inception of the College. The Psychiatry Department offers Outpatient and Inpatient services apart from Academic Services and Research activities. Psychiatry Department gets referral from Medicine and Surgery OP apart from Speciality OPs, Casualty, IMCU and callovers from all wards. Considering huge inflow of Psychiatric patients and the needy, District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) under National Mental Health Programme was started in Tiruppur district in 2021.We are running separate Deaddiction ward for both Male and Females and Emergency Care and Recovery Centre ward for wandering mentally ill patients.

  • Training of Medical officers working in Primary Health Centers & Government hospitals in Taluk, Non Taluk & district Head Quarter Hospital in Tiruppur District were given under District Mental Health Programme for 14 days in Mental Health. In order to identify Patients attending Hospital with Mental ailments, these training helped in early Identification & effective Intervention at the Primary & Secondary level. They were trained to refer difficult cases to tertiary care at Government Medical College Hospital.

To provide comprehensive, evidence-based, and compassionate mental health care to individuals across all age groups. To ensure accurate diagnosis and effective management of psychiatric disorders using a biopsychosocial approach.

TEACHING AND TRAINING

To impart high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in psychiatry in accordance with NMC guidelines.To train medical students and residents in essential clinical skills, ethical practice, and holistic patient care.

RESEARCH AND ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

To encourage and conduct high-quality clinical and translational research in psychiatry and allied neurosciences.To promote evidence-based practice through continuous academic activities, journal clubs, seminars, and conferences.

COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH AND OUTREACH

To enhance awareness and reduce stigma related to mental illness through community outreach programmes, mental health camps, and public education initiatives.

To support early identification and intervention for common mental disorders at the community level.

To collaborate with governmental and non-governmental agencies for the promotion of mental well-being.

PREVENTIVE PSYCHIATRY AND MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION

To focus on prevention of mental illness and promotion of positive mental health through psychoeducation and counselling.
